The European Quantum Week is an online multi-modular event taking place between 2-6 November 2020. During the European Quantum Week, Education Sessions are being held where students from all over Europe will be given the opportunity to participate in activities about the fundamentals of quantum technology and learn more about quantum technologies and their applications in the modern world.

As part of the European Quantum Week Education Sessions, the Quantum Communications Hub and UCL Quantum Science and Technology Institute are hosting some fascinating online talks on quantum technologies for schools and students to attend. The talks, which are being hosted live on YouTube, will be ideal for students to attend as enrichment activities. The talks include:

‘Quantum Communications Technologies’

Speaker: Professor Tim Spiller, University of York, UK and Director of the UK Quantum Communications Hub

Date: Tuesday 3 November 2020, 4pm GMT

Location: Quantum Communications Hub YouTube channel

Abstract:

To many people, quantum physics is a term that goes hand in hand with science fiction movies thanks to mind-blowing yet fascinating quantum concepts such as entanglement, superposition and teleportation. However, these fundamental concepts are now responsible for some incredibly exciting and life-changing emerging technologies. We are entering the second quantum revolution (the first being the emergence of lasers and devices utilising semi-conductors etc) and are now starting to see new quantum technologies move out of the lab and into everyday life. In this talk, Professor Tim Spiller will introduce some of the key concepts of quantum physics and will explain how quantum technologies, specific to communications, will revolutionise and future proof cyber security.

‘Weaving baskets and braiding hair for quantum computing’

Speaker: Dr Simon Burton, UCLQ Quantum Science and Technology Institute, London, UK

Date: Thursday 5 November 2020, 4pm GMT

Location: UCLQ Quantum Science and Technology Institute YouTube channel

Abstract:

If you can braid hair you can understand something about the mathematics of quantum computers. A mysterious kind of particle called an “anyon” has been hypothesized to exist. These particles can become tangled with each other to make braids! This is one way that people are working on to make a quantum computer. Hear more about this in this talk which is part of the first edition of the European Quantum Week (EQW) organized by the Quantum Flagship.

Events are taking place across Europe during the week of 2-6 November, for more information on events taking place in other countries, please visit the European Quantum Week Education Session website.
