CAREERS IN QUANTUM

Quantum technologies are transforming how we compute, communicate, sense, and secure information, creating exciting career opportunities in one of the world's fastest-growing technology sectors. Whether advancing quantum research, developing new technologies, or helping innovative solutions reach the market, a career in quantum offers the chance to shape the future.

While many roles are rooted in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM), the sector also needs expertise in areas such as business development, marketing, project management, and policy. Apprenticeships, technician training programmes, and upskilling opportunities provide valuable routes into the industry, making quantum a field that welcomes talent from a wide range of backgrounds.

UK GOVERNMENT SUPPORT

These diverse career routes into the sector have been strongly promoted by successive UK governments, which over the last decade have invested substantial amounts of money in quantum training and skills development, including to support entrepreneurship. To date, this has primarily been targeted at postgraduate level but in 2025, the UK Government published an independent report compiled by the Quantum Skills Taskforce – a group of expert representatives from industry, academia, professional societies, national labs and government departments and agencies. The remit of the Taskforce was to consider the skills needs – current and future – of the sector and propose recommendations on how these needs could be met. Its recommendations stress the need to forge new career pathways into the quantum community, beyond the traditional physics/engineering ones.
